EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
