The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
