The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
