This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
